Name: Fariha Binta Faruque

Nakanwaji Sumayyah is a dedicated and proactive Environmental Health Science student currently in Year 2, Semester 1 at Makerere university. She has consistently demonstrated strong leadership abilities, a commitment to student welfare, and active engagement in both academic and community initiatives. Sumayyah is passionate about environmental awareness, gender-based advocacy, health, and safety promotion, seeking opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the improvement of public health and environmental conditions.

Sumayyah’s leadership experience includes serving as a Safeguarding Champion, where she actively promotes the safety and wellbeing of fellow students, and as a Mobiliser for the Destiny Moments mentorship group, coordinating activities and supporting peer mentorshipinitiatives. Through these roles, she has honed her skills in teamwork, communication, and community mobilisation.

Her academic and extracurricular achievements include participating in safeguarding awareness sessions during the orientation of freshers at the university from 2nd–7th August, contributing to the promotion of safe and inclusive campus practices. She also participated in abstract writing for the JASH Conference, where her submission was accepted for a poster presentation, demonstrating her commitment to scientific communication and research.

In addition, Sumayyah has actively engaged in environmental and community advocacy. She took part in the Air Pollution Awareness skit during World Environmental Health Day celebrations, participated in the Gender-Based Violence Awareness Walk on 24th November

2025, and received recognition in the form of T-shirts and scarves for her contributions. Moreover, she successfully completed the fire safety drill training organized by MUEHSA (Makerere University Environmental Health Students’ Association) and was awarded a certificate, reflecting her practical skills in safety and emergency preparedness. Sumayyah’s skills include leadership and mobilisation, safeguarding and student welfare, teamwork, environmental health knowledge, creative writing, storytelling, and public engagement. She combines academic learning with hands-on experience to actively contribute to health, safety, and environmental improvement projects.

Outside her academic and leadership pursuits, Sumayyah enjoys reading novels, watching movies, and writing stories, reflecting her creative and inquisitive nature. She aspires to continue developing her skills, engaging with communities, and making a positive impact in both environmental and public health initiatives.
