What Did you enjoy about the program?
The course was highly practical and hands-on, with immediate use of real datasets in R, SPSS enabling quick mastery of advanced techniques like survival analysis and logistic regression.
The instructors were experienced biostatisticians from clinical and public health backgrounds, extremely supportive, and excellent at explaining complex topics clearly.
A major strength was the emphasis on reproducible research, teaching modern tools like R studio, shareable, and well-structured analyses.
The small batch size fostered strong peer connections, ongoing community support via WhatsApp, plus lifetime access to recordings and updated materials, adding excellent long-term value. Overall, it was one of the most enjoyable and career-boosting short courses.
PROFILE
Name: Mr. ONYERA JOSEPH
Mr. Onyera Joseph is a dedicated public health Officer with a strong foundation in applied statistical methods, epidemiological study design, and advanced data analysis holding a Bachelors of Science in Public Health from Mountains of the Moon University with a background in Clinical Medicine and Community Health from Mbale School of Clinical Officers, complemented formal academic training with targeted professional development, most recently completing an intensive short course in Research Tools and Software in Biostatistics offered by Trainer International.
During the Trainer International program, he acquired hands-on proficiency in leading statistical software platforms including R, SPSS, kobo toolbox, advanced use of excel. The curriculum’s practical, project-based approach enabled rapid mastery of advanced techniques such as survival analysis, mixed-effects modeling, multiple imputation for missing data, logistic and Poisson regression.
Beyond technical skills, the course stood out for its exceptional faculty-seasoned biostatisticians with decades of experience in clinical trials, pharmaceutical research, and large-scale public health studies.
Their real-world examples and personalized mentoring created an encouraging environment that transformed complex methodological challenges into approachable, solvable problems. The small cohort size fostered lasting professional relationships; I remains an active member of an ongoing peer-support community where members continue to exchange code, job opportunities, and solutions to emerging analytical questions.
Prior to this specialized training, he had gained substantial research experience in collecting and analyzing data for my research. These roles honed skills in study protocol development, quality assurance, and preparation of manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals. Currently, Joseph works as an in charge Medical Clinical Officer at Medical Teams International, where responsibilities include generating automated reports, and providing methodological consultation to multidisciplinary research teams.
A firm believer in open science and capacity building, he also looks forward to mentoring junior analysts and conducts occasional workshops on R programming and reproducible research practices for local researchers. With a rare blend of rigorous methodological training, cutting-edge software expertise, and practical field experience, he is committed to producing high-quality evidence that informs policy and improves health outcomes in resource-limited settings. Outside of work, I enjoy long-distance running, volunteering with community health screening programs, activities that reinforce a deep appreciation for precision, persistence, and service.
Joseph is actively seeking opportunities to contribute statistical leadership to large-scale clinical trials, longitudinal cohort studies, or implementation research initiatives in infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, or maternal-child health.
