Aviti Thadei Mushi is a Tanzanian electrical engineer and academic. He is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). He earned his PhD in Electrical & Computer Engineering from Yokohama National University in 2017, where his doctoral thesis focused on nonlinear deadbeat control for boost converters. He also holds an MSc in Power Systems and High Voltage Engineering and a BSc in Electrical Engineering, both from UDSM. During the MSc studies, Dr Mushi researched outdoor polymeric insulators in tropical climates and shared insights to the electrical power utility that these insulators had a potential to last longer and make the transmission lines cheaper compared to the traditional insulators. During the PhD studies, Dr Mushi focused on applications of innovative control algorithms for DC-DC converters that are used in rocket propulsion systems as well as EVs. His research showed remarkable improvement over the existing algorithms in both reference tracking response and disturbance rejection.
Dr. Mushi’s research covers renewable energy, rural electrification, smart grids, high-voltage engineering, power converters, and telemedicine. He uses these research results to inform his teaching at the university.
He has co-authored works on several themes such as - microgrids in the Democratic Republic of Congo; design of a hybrid renewable energy system for International Airport; improving power quality in industrial networks using dynamic voltage restorers; and on-line partial discharge detection in high-voltage cable joints, comparing different diagnostic techniques. In addition, he has co-authored several textbooks and reference books that are used by the primary and secondary schools of Tanzania.
He served as Chairperson of the University of Dar es Salaam Academic Staff Assembly during the 2020–2022 term. During his tenure, he managed to keep the UDASA Newsletter alive with timely publications. He spearheaded transformations that brought UDASA to its members and made them avid participants in its activities. He groomed several leaders as well. During this time, he served as the member to the University Council and was responsible for the governing of the UDSM Management and Senate. He also served as a committee member of Estates Department of UDSM advising on equitable housing for staff and students, as well as overall estates management of UDSM properties.

As a lecturer, he teaches courses in power electronics, high-voltage technology, renewable energies, and smart grid systems. He has supervised and guided several students in their B.Sc. and M.Sc. Engineering studies. Further, he is guiding students in their B.Sc., M.Sc. and PhD in Engineering studies. All students assigned to him for supervision receive a dedicated support that enables them to undertake research with determination.
Apart from academic duties, Dr. Mushi works on several research projects on SUNRISE, telemedicine, renewable energies, microbial fuel cells, high voltage technologies, power electronics and others.
He consults on affordable rural electrification, high voltage outdoor insulation systems, and all kinds of electrifications for buildings, industries, and systems. These services are offered to both public and private sectors.
