It was a transformative experience that broadened my research horizons and equipped me with cutting-edge skills. As a nursing student passionate about maternal and child health, I aimed to deepen my understanding of global health disparities.

Through Freya, I gained hands-on experience in research design and scientific writing, working alongside esteemed mentors and a diverse cohort.

This programme has empowered me to drive impactful research in underserved communities. I'm grateful to the Freya team and my cohort for their support and collaboration. I'm excited to apply my skills to improve health outcomes for women and children globally.

Name: OMOWUNMI BOLUWATIFE AKANBI


Omowunmi Boluwatife Akanbi is a 500-level nursing student with a strong passion for improving women's and children's health through research and community interventions, particularly in underserved communities. Her academic pursuits are driven by a desire to contribute meaningfully to the field of nursing and make a lasting impact on vulnerable populations.

As an early-career researcher, Omowunmi has been involved in various initiatives aimed at addressing health disparities and promoting evidence-based practice. Her leadership roles have equipped her with the skills to drive positive change, including her tenure as General Secretary of the Nigerian Universities Nursing Students Association (NUNSA) Standing Committee on Research and Academic Development (SCORNA) in 2024, where she worked hand in hand with like minds to implement research initiatives and academic development projects. Currently, she serves as the Welfare Director of NUNSA's Standing Committee on Public and Social Services (SCOPAS) for 2025, overseeing activities.

Omowunmi's leadership extends beyond nursing associations; she is an MCN '25 Fellow with the Millennium Campus Network, where she engages in innovative projects and networking opportunities. Her other notable affiliations include being a FistulaCare Initiative Fellow under the Gen M Project, a graduate of Gynix Afrika's GACA First Cohort, and Human Resource Manager at LivingSpring Medical Missions (TLMM) Uniosun Chapter.

As a committed Christian, she holds leadership positions as president and Bible Study Coordinator of the Fellowship of Christian Nurses, UNIOSUN Chapter, where she fosters spiritual growth and community service among members.

Through her research endeavours, volunteering, leadership roles, and community involvement, Omowunmi aims to make a profound impact in the lives of women and children, driving positive change and promoting health equity in underserved communities.

Omowunmi Boluwatife Akanbi, and she is a dedicated nursing student with a strong passion for women and children’s health. Throughout her academic journey, she has developed a deep commitment to improving the well-being of vulnerable populations. She take great pleasure in actively participating in health outreaches and community engagement initiatives, where I can make a tangible impact and contribute to positive change.

She is an avid learner, always seeking opportunities to expand her knowledge and skills through various learning channels, including academic coursework, workshops, and hands-on experiences. Akanbi enthusiasm for learning is driven by my desire to stay up-to-date with best practices in healthcare to enhance her ability to provide compassionate, evidence-based care.

As a future nursing professional, She is eager to continue making a difference in the lives of

women and children, and excited about the prospect of collaborating with like-minded

individuals who share her passion for healthcare and community service.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

NURSING STUDENT- MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSING: Uniosun Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, Osun State.

 Participated in scheduled rotations in burns unit, renal unit, accident and emergency ward, pediatrics ward, male and female surgical and medical wards.

 Conducted patients assessment, contributed to diagnosis and formulated nursing care plan under the supervision of experienced nurses.

 Gained hands-on experience in patient care including conducting physical examination, taking history, checking and charting vital signs, monitoring input and output and providing emotional support.

 Maintained patient confidentiality and adhered to ethical healthcare practices.

NURSING STUDENT- MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH NURSING: Adeoyo Maternity State Hospital, Oyo State

 Provided antenatal and postnatal care to pregnant women and new mothers,

VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE

 The LivingSpring Medical Missions: As the human resource manager, I helped to plan outreaches,and organize the manpower needed for the outreach.

 Gynix Afrika: As a volunteer at Gynix, I collected data from pregnant women at Odo-Oba, Oyo State through a questionnaire. This wass don in Yoruba language.

 ModupeIre SickleCell Advocacy Initiative: I co-hosted a panel session in commemoration of the world sickle cell day. The panel consisted of a compassionate doctor, a resilient mother of two, who is a sickle cell warrior and a dedicated caregiver. They each shared their unique perspectives and experiences with the sickle cell disease.

 The Intentional Ladies Initiative: Here, I spoke to about 150 secondary school girls on the importance of menstrual hygiene and how they can effectively manage menstrual cramps.

 SmileyBase Initiative: In commemoration of children’s day, we organized and outreach for kids in the orphanage and on the streets. I was in the children welfare directorate and I helped to make over 50 children smile.
